My Aspirations to Become a Scholar-Practitioner

My journey toward becoming a scholar-practitioner commenced even before completing my Bachelor of Science in Nursing. The desire to become a nurse practitioner was clear, though I grappled with determining the specific patient population I wanted to serve. It was at this juncture that Walden University came into view, sparked by the online success story of a colleague who graduated as a cardiac care nurse practitioner. The prospect of completing the entire program remotely from home was both fascinating and enticing.

With a nursing career spanning fourteen years, I have garnered experience in diverse areas, including pediatric care, geriatric care, administration, a mixed medical intensive care unit, and a per diem role caring for sexual assault victims. Throughout these specialties, I have recognized the pivotal role of mental health, understanding its profound impact on the physical well-being of patients and the positive outcomes achievable in various healthcare settings. This interconnection between physical and mental health has directed my focus toward pursuing a degree as a mental health nurse practitioner, with a compelling desire to bridge the gap and assist patients in realizing their full potential.

I am Mercy Mathew, and my nursing journey began in 2013 as a floor nurse in a nursing home. Transitioning to my current role in 2015 at a living center for mentally challenged individuals marked a significant shift in my career trajectory. This transition necessitated the application of distinct skill sets and knowledge, as I discovered the unique challenges and opportunities involved in caring for individuals with mental health challenges. Through impactful interactions with both patients and multidisciplinary teams, I found a passion for this field, inspiring me to explore and elevate my professional care. This realization fueled my decision to pursue a career as a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner.
