When you work as an LPN, you’re in charge of supervising State Tested Nursing Assistants (STNAs) who work alongside you. Just like any other job, there are STNAs who are hardworking and caring, and then there are some who are not. The challenging part when dealing with careless and lazy STNAs is that their job involves taking care of actual people. They have responsibilities for hands-on care, providing emotional support, and offering daily guidance.
Throughout my career, I’ve encountered different types of STNAs because everyone is unique, right? Occasionally, I’m fortunate to work with exceptional STNAs who exhibit the fundamental qualities you find in great nurses. This is where I step in, providing encouragement and serving as a role model.

Recently, I had the pleasure of working with an outstanding STNA who genuinely cares about the residents and goes above and beyond to ensure they are in top-notch condition. During our conversations, she shared her reasons for becoming an STNA and her aspirations, revealing her intention to use this role as a stepping stone to becoming an LPN.
I make an effort to give her constructive feedback to broaden her knowledge and enhance her work ethic. I find joy in teaching her new things. She observes my interactions with doctors and families on the phone and learns how I collaborate with outside agencies such as pharmacies and hospice nurses. She actively asks questions about medications and treatment orders, demonstrating a commitment to educating herself.
Like many others, she didn’t know where to start in her journey to becoming an LPN. I shared my experience of starting at a well-known technical school in Cleveland right after high school graduation. Having enjoyed the program and appreciated the professors, I couldn’t help but recommend it to her. Before I knew it, she had applied.
There’s nothing more fulfilling than assisting others in achieving their nursing goals. I am impressed by the great start she has made by choosing to begin her journey as an STNA.
