Changing LPN Job Specialties

Changing LPN Job Specialties

Recently, I’ve come across various opportunities to switch my job as an LPN. When it rains, it pours, right? I’m extremely content working in long-term care; geriatrics is where I feel at home. However, occasionally, different job positions become available, and the decision to stay or go becomes a dilemma.

I embarked on my LPN career not only because I aspired to be a nurse but also to provide for my family. To achieve that, I needed to earn more than the minimum wage I was making in high school. Money plays a significant role, and everyone desires to maximize their earnings. When contemplating a job change or considering a new opportunity, understanding the compensation package is crucial. For me, compensation encompasses salary and bonuses like overtime, weekend pay, birthday pay, and holiday pay. Sometimes, these smaller incentives can accumulate and influence the decision-making process in a job search.

Finding Your Place as an LPN

As a mother and wife, having a consistent and specific schedule is essential for the smooth running of our day-to-day lives. Recently, I’ve explored changing jobs to find a schedule that aligns better with my life. I often find myself daydreaming about the perfect schedule! Scheduling holds immense importance to me. I prefer a fixed schedule that remains unchanged, allowing me to plan our lives months in advance.

When seeking a different job within the LPN field, it might involve exploring opportunities outside your current specialty. In my case, the few job offers I’ve had recently were still connected to geriatrics. One offer was from a geriatrics doctor’s office, and another was in assisted living, which, in my view, is quite similar to long-term care.

I’m always on the lookout for job postings. Even when I’m not actively seeking a new LPN job, I find them interesting. It serves as a continual source of education for LPNs, revealing which places are frequently hiring, a factor that I don’t necessarily view positively. It also enlightens me about other specialty options. Keeping an eye open never hurts; you never know when your dream job might be just around the corner.
